“LIKE A MULTI-FACETED DIAMOND MARC WAS COMPLEX, YET BEAUTIFUL IN HIS CLARITY”
– Greg Caplan
We will miss your broad knowledge, your profound depth of understanding, your entrepreneurial spirit, your infectious spark and your quirky humour
You’re my Brother
Ever understated, he was known, by many, to live a full, passionate life, simultaneously on different levels, whilst continually giving 100% to each of these, sometimes, unrelated areas.
Marc had a natural gift with technology. It felt like he was always ‘plugged in’. When he was five and I was three, we had a battery operated cable-car that carried important cargo between our bunk beds. From the day he discovered the soldering iron, I had a painful childhood stepping on resistors, capacitors and other bits of electronics. Whenever we met, especially in London, we’d ‘sync in’ to explore the latest and greatest ground-breaking technology and spent hours, even days, in electronic shops in Tottenham Court Road. When I saw Marc in action on the production of SKY. I was so proud of him. His creative strategy for the launch of SKY became a reality. Only my brother Marc, could bring the mighty Soho to a standstill, as one facility house after another fell under his spell of rendering the un-renderable. After three, 24-hour, days of every available machine being pushed to the nth degree, Soho was released from his grip.
Watching Marc, quietly and proudly enjoying how others took on and interpreted his ideas, taught me the meaning of humility. He was one of the fortunate ones who loved what he did and so never ‘had to work another day in his life’. Life and work were interwoven. With the arrival of non-linear editing equipment, Marc opened a new company called Multi Channel Media (MCM) selling ‘the Stratosphere’ for his old friends from Grass Valley. MCM could have stood for ‘Multi Convergence Marc’ whose technical skills converged with the visual arts. He had convergence in his DNA. And now, as technology is finally catching up with Marc, he had to go. But like a true early adopter, he was always one to move on quickly to the next big thing.
Marc, we will miss your broad knowledge, your profound depth of understanding, your entrepreneurial spirit, your infectious spark and your quirky humour. We will miss boasting about your latest, greatest, insights and triumphs. Like so many of the stars who leave us too early, your magnificence will continue to shine.
